Atlanta Hearing Evaluation

If you have noticed a change in your hearing or ability to communicate, it is time to take action. If you ask people to repeat themselves, need to turn up your TV or phone to understand words, or have difficulty communicating in a situation with background noise like a restaurant or family gathering, you are showing signs of hearing loss. When looking for a hearing evaluation in Atlanta, look no further than the hearing experts of The Atlanta Hearing Institute.

The Doctors of Audiology at Atlanta Hearing Institute work side by side with our physicians when providing patients with diagnostic audiologic examinations (hearing evaluations) in order to determine a correct diagnosis of your hearing problems. During your first visit with one of our hearing doctors, he or she will investigate your hearing health history including:

    • How long have you noticed difficulty with your hearing?
    • Do you have difficulty hearing in both ears or just one ear?
    • Was this difficulty in hearing sudden or gradual?
    • Do you hear a ringing (tinnitus) in your ears?
    • Do you have a history of ear infections?
    • Do you have any pain or discharge in your ears?
    • Is there family history of hearing loss?
    • Do you experience dizziness?
    • Have you been exposed to loud noise, heavy equipment, or gunfire?
    • What are your communication difficulties?
    • How is your hearing problem affecting your activities and lifestyle?

A variety of tests can be done during a hearing evaluation to identify and diagnose hearing loss. Using a light (otoscope), audiologists check for anything out of the ordinary in the ear canal that might have an effect on the test results. Once we know a blockage is not the problem, our Doctors of Audiology will proceed with a variety of testing procedures, tailored for the age of the patient and based on information collected during the hearing health history. Diagnostic testing may include:

    • Pure-Tone Air and Bone Conduction
    • Speech Thresholds and Speech Understanding
    • Tympanometry
    • Acoustic Reflex Thresholds
    • Tinnitus Matching and Masking
    • Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs)
    • Cochlear Implant Evaluation
    • Soundfield Visual Reinforcement or Play Audiometry (Specialized testing for children or difficulty to test populations)
    • Videonystagmography (VNG specialized testing for patients with vertigo, dizziness, or balance problems)

All of our testing is conducted in state of the art sound booths, calibrated annually to the strictest of standards and large enough to accommodate patients with walkers, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

After a hearing evaluation you will have comfort knowing you have taken the first step in improving your communication abilities. A thorough explanation of your results and review of any medical problems of the ear will occur with our Doctors of Audiology and physicians on the same day of your hearing evaluation. Recommendations for treatment or management of your individual hearing problems will then be made. It is our pleasure to help guide you and make you feel comfortable at every step of the process.
